The endearing characters do help to mitigate these issues but of even greater help is the astoundingly good animation. There’s also numerous instances where you can miss your chance to complete a level (sometimes literally if your timing is off) and then have no option but to restart. Although it is very satisfying to work it out you constantly feel like something of an automaton, following along in Takumi’s wake and simply repeating his prescribed actions. More problematic is that there’s only ever one very specific solution to each of the chapters. You can fast forward it if you’ve already seen it before but thanks to some fairly harsh checkpointing the game doesn’t really do enough to limit the amount of repetition.
That’s the gameplay in a nutshell and although this isn’t as much of a visual novel as Ace Attorney there’s an awful lot of plot and dialogue to wade through. Sissel can rewind the last four minutes of anyone’s life and so through a mixture of puzzle solving and Groundhog Day style observation alter their fate.
Often the immediate goal is to simply create a path to another area, but each of the chapters has an overall objective that usually involves preventing a key character from dying. Once he does have control he can then activate the object in whatever preset manner the game dictates, from making an umbrella pop open to causing a windmill to spin. He can possess any inanimate object but can only move from one to another if they are close by. Struck down by a serious case of amnesia he resolves to find out who he is, why he was killed and to help keep alive the red-headed girl that also seems to be mixed up with his assassination.įor reasons that are not immediately explained Sissel has special ‘Ghost Trick’ powers, although these are still quite limited. The graphics have been sharpened considerably but this is otherwise exactly the same game, which can sometimes prove disastrous for a smartphone port but here the controls have always been focused on the touchscreen.Īlthough Sissel’s spirit is told that he will be erased from existence upon the next sunrise, he takes the night’s events surprisingly calmly.
That’s not even particularly expensive for a smartphone game nowadays and obviously far less than the original DS game’s £29.99 asking price.
